Wayne Rooney Nike ad

Denotations

This advert shows:
• Wayne Rooney looking like he has scored a goal.
• He is showing him being patriotic – with the red cross across his body.
• When his arms are stretched out it makes him look like the flag.
• His fists are clenched and he looks like he is shouting.
• The red cross looks like blood.
• His skin is made to look really pale and it makes the red look really vibrant and stands out.

Connotations

• Nike could want you to associate the advert with success.
• The red cross symbolises the English flag, which makes the advert cultural.
• The advert is political because it could be seen as offensive because the red cross looks like blood.

Some useful comments here Sam. Could you use the notes to write a report in continous prose please.

Still some work for Project One:

2) You need to investigate the ways advertising impacts on our daily lives. You need to complete a 5 min experiment to see how many adverts you are exposed to in Norwich in 5 mins. This experiment must be recorded onto a digital camera. You must photograph all of the adverts you see in 5 minutes!

Key Concept covered: Audience

Assessment Objective Three (AO3): Production Skills

4) What does the organisation Adbusters do? How do they feel about the advertising industry and modern society in general? Search for Adbusters on You Tube - find two of their spoof TV ad campaigns - comment on the two adverts - what were Adbusters trying to say? What were they trying to make you (the audience) think about? Are the two adverts you have chosen effective? Give reasons for your answer. What are the similarities and differences between the spoof Adbusters ads and the real ones?

Key Concept covered: Industry

Assessment Objective Two (AO2): Analysis and Interpretation
